First let me wish you all a happy new year. It’s now 2017 and we are all having a list of New Year resolutions and many goals and dreams which we would like to achieve by the end of this year.
A recent article that interested me was about the about the leap second. It had explained about how Google was planning to alter its Network Time Protocol (NTP) so as to include the extra second on December 31st and how the leap second could just disrupt the functioning of the internet had it not been considered. To say it in simple terms, the leap second was just an extra second added to the clock on December 31st so as to compensate for the revolution of the earth.

time
Why so much of a confusion?

The thing that interested me was not the leap second or the Network time protocol or even the effect of the leap second on the internet. It was only about the importance of each second in our life. This made me realize how many precious hours I have wasted till now aimlessly scrolling news-feeds! When a second is just given that much importance in the current scenario, just think about how much your time is valuable.
This explains my new formed view that I wish to convey — “time is a resource”.
It’s a resource used properly by the successful and spent recklessly by those who fail in their endeavors. The most valuable gift   given by god is definitely “time”. Once wasted, time can never be earned back. It may be duly called as the most valuable thing in the world. Spend it wisely and it would elevate you to great heights else you perish without achieving anything.
There is a term in economics known as opportunity cost, knowledge of which would help to never waste your time for trivial matters in life. Opportunity cost effectively quantizes the value of your time.
Suppose you are planning to start a restaurant after quitting your job, then the revenue you earn from the restaurant must be greater than the money you could have earned in your job so as to be profitable in this venture. Thus opportunity cost is the money you could have earned working in the time you had spent for something. Hence your time could be compared approximately with money. A person earning Rs.25000 a month would have wasted 100Rs. if he had spent an hour unproductively. This may explain you why I would like to refer time as a resource.
An organization working on a project hires people primarily not for the skills but for their time. So the next time you land a job in your dream company or recruit members for your startup remember that you are hiring them for their time and not their skills. So literally we are paid just for our precious time we give for them, be it in an organization or a business.
Such being the importance of time, and where people are paid for their time, we are remorselessly wasting it in social networking and internet just because we are left with abundance of it.
God doesn’t give you money to survive in this earth, he just gives you time to live. He doesn’t like to pay you in dollars or Euros; he just pays you in seconds, minutes, hours, days, months and years. Hence that’s why we have been referring the usage of time as spending.
For those who are poor in managing time let me tell you a simple way to boss over it at your hand. It’s to micromanage time by splitting your it into small chunks and planning what you are going to do in that span. Suppose you have a plan or a task that should be completed in a month, split it into thirty small tasks that should be completed in a day. This makes it easy to monitor the progress and hence be in control over the time in hand. When you have practiced micromanagement of time you would be in a position to decide clearly what you should do in your allocated space. Learning to Micromanage time may be the best thing you could learn that would help you achieve your targets and finish your tasks within stipulated attitude of time.
The similarity between successful people of all fields is that they value triumph and time. You cannot see them wasting both these because they are here only because they have used it properly to become the master in their respective fields. I may quote the words of Steve Jobs which describes how much he valued time. It goes as “My favorite things in life don’t cost any money. It’s really clear that the most precious resource we all have is time”. A person who respects time this much is sure to succeed and Steve Jobs is just an example to it.
Finally, those who have till now wasted many hours in life(including me), let’s just assure ourselves that we would manage our time in a better way that helps us attain our targets and am signing off with another quote from Jobs-Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living Someone Else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”
